The acclaimed Dutch women's chamber choir

On Friday, October 29 at 8:00 PM, the acclaimed Dutch women's chamber choir Cantate from the city of Venlo, conducted by Dion Ritten, were the featured performers in a joint concert at St. Joseph's Church, Yorkville, as part of their first USA tour. The concert also included performances by the New Amsterdam Singers of New York City, conducted by Clara Longstreth, and the St. Joseph's Singers of St. Joseph's Yorkville, conducted by Stephen Black. This program continues a series of joint concerts between Dutch and American choirs in which Cantate has served as host to several American choirs in The Netherlands.
The program included Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen by Josef Rheinberger, Hieremiae prophetae lamentations by Alberto Ginastera, and music by J.S. Bach, Franz Schubert, Michael Haydn, and György Orbán.
Cantate, founded in 1970, is an award-winning chamber chorus comprised of 20 women ages 18 to 41. The chorus received first prize in the 1980 International Choral Festival Belgium, and it has continued to receive many international awards. Known for its variety of repertoire, Cantate has performed concerts in Germany, Belgium, France and Italy. The ensemble has been praised for its musical and energetic performances throughout the Netherlands and Europe.
Dion Ritten joined Cantate as its conductor in September 2002. He conducts several choruses in the Netherlands, and has appeared in choral and opera productions with the Limburgs Symphonie Orkest, the Kerkraads Symphonie Orkest, and the Tegels Symphonie Orkest. He is active as a clinician and adjudicator in Europe and the U.S.
